Grotte de Pair-non-Pair
Bordeaux
Sightseeing and Attractions
The Grotte de Pair-non-Pair cave has been occupied for 60,000 years and was first discovered by a cow in 1881 when its foot got stuck. Much of what was discovered (15,000 flint tools, 6,000 animal bones of 60 different species etc) is now on display at the Musée d’Aquitaine and the Natural History Museum in Bordeaux. Both are superb museums of the Bordeaux region and well worth the visit.
The animals carved on the walls of the caves seem to be in pairs, two mammoths, two oxen, two horses side by side, etc.
The etching of the Megaloceros, or largest deer of all time is quite famous. Because of size and atmospheric fragility of the site, the number of people allowed into the cave at one time is limited.
This is one of the few prehistoric caves still open to the public so a rare opportunity to witness this very early history of man. Book at least a week ahead if not more!
