Grotte de Celestine
Bordeaux
Sightseeing and Attractions
The Grotte de Celestine was known only to experienced cavers until mid 1970’s but is now open to the public. It was discovered in 1845 and was only accessible for a long time through the finders bedroom. You walk through an underground stream and face spectacular formations of stalactites. There are over 2km of trails underground which go down to a depth of up to 13 meters.
This Bordeaux region is famous for caves and caverns and of course great dry white wines! The Entre-Deux-Mers region begins just 20 minutes from Bordeaux as you head North-West in the direction Libourne. This is an area of Abbys, chateaux and walled towns from the middle ages and there is a strong British presence.
Reservations are required for the 45 minute tours and the number of visitors is limited. It's a great place to take families and kids (need to be at least 1m 20 in height). Take sweaters!
Open all year by appointment - Tuesday through Sunday and every day in July and August.
