Reaching 103 meters in height the Dune du Pyla is 2.5 km long. The greatest king of sand castles began to form over 5000 years ago and with shifting sand moves inland 7 meters every year. Don’t worry, steps are also in place to help you climb to the top where of course you must climb to be rewarded with the most fantastic views.
Try visits in the early evening to get a glimpse of dolphins and porpoises cavorting in the warm waters of the Arcachon bay.
You may even find snow boarders trying their skills at sand surfing, for the moment diverted to the Dune from the rolling waves of the Côte d'Argent, one of the most popular surfing areas in Europe.
If you challenge and conquer the Dune du Pyla in the morning you can spend the rest of the day recovering on the beach and head to a great Arcachon restaurant in the evening!
There are also several small beachy tourist shops selling colourful beach wear and souvenirs plus modest cafes at the bottom of the Dune du Pyla. You'll be pleasantly surprised with their servings of delicious moule and frites (mussels and fries) including a glass of wine or beer for around 12€.
